The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army.
